Ludwig Dill
German (1848–1940)
Oil on canvas; 28 1/2 x 36 1/8 in.
Charles and Emma Frye Collection, 1952.037
A prominent figure in the Munich Secession and the association’s president beginning in 1894, Ludwig Dill is best known for his paintings of Dachau marshes. In addition to the German landscape, Dill was also inspired by Japanese woodcuts, evidenced here in the use of a lowered perspective and foreshortened ground planes. The Birch Grove is on view in the exhibition The Munich Secession and America (January 24–April 12, 2009).
