Shah Tahmasp’s copy of Firdausi’s Shahnama (completed in 1010 AD) or Book of Kings was one of the most lavishly illustrated of all Persian manuscripts. Beginning around 1520, two generations of royal painters brought the legendary epic poem to life with elegance, drama, and wit.
