Hellenistic Pergamon

In the third and second centuries BCE, Pergamon’s rulers strove to emulate Athens as they constructed their capital. But instead of Athenian classicism, works such as the Dying Gaul and Great Altar of Zeus epitomize the passion and pathos of Hellenistic sculpture.
