In this lush 2003 film based on Tracy Chevalier’s novel, one of Vermeer’s most famous paintings gets a back story: the artist (played by Colin Firth) reframes his work around a bright new maidservant (Scarlett Johansson). Offered as a complement to the Vermeer art history lecture series presented by Rebecca Albiani, who joins Robert Horton for a discussion of the film. (DVD projection; 100 minutes.)
