Anticipating Freud: German Symbolism

As Freud dissected the human psyche, several German painters did the same. Max Klinger chronicled a fetish object, Franz von Stuck mined the same Greek myths that would inspire Freud, and Albert von Keller delved into hypnotism and the occult.
