As One: Twelfth Annual WAEA Student Exhibition
February 13 - June 06, 2010
Inspired by the collaborative strategies evident in Tim Rollins and K.O.S.: A History and The Seattle Project, this year’s annual student exhibition highlights innovative models of teaching. To participate in the exhibition, Washington State art educators shared in writing how they use creativity and teamwork to foster critical thinking skills in their students.
In this exhibition, the teachers’ statements about collaboration are exhibited alongside the artworks they describe. The multifaceted responses demonstrate the many ways in which teamwork can be utilized in the process of making art. For example, one educator describes her entire class of third graders collectively devising a sculpture using group discussions and a voting process. Another educator states she encourages discussion that often leads to new and innovative problem solving.
Providing students of all ages with the unique experience of exhibiting their artwork in an art museum, this annual exhibition demonstrates the Frye Art Museum’s commitment to our community through programs, exhibitions, and long term relationships with educators. We are grateful to the students, teachers, and Washington Art Education Association board members who contributed to the program’s success.
This exhibition was funded by the Frye Foundation and curated by Deborah Sepulveda, the Frye’s Manager of Student and Teacher Programs; Mari Atkinson and Amada Lang, WAEA Youth Art Month Representatives.
The WAEA’s mission is to promote excellence in visual arts education in Washington State. WAEA promotes art education through professional development, service, advancement of knowledge, and leadership. Please visit waea.net for more information about student art advocacy.
