ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
This team consists of five full-time employees responsible for raising donations from individuals and organizations (memberships, donations, grants, sponsorships). The Development team manages the museum’s membership program and public events including exhibition openings, cultivation and sponsorship events, and facility rentals. Development is also a hub for the organization, providing database support across the museum, recruiting and managing volunteers, and working collaboratively on interdepartmental initiatives. In particular, the department works closely with the Communications team on member and donor communications and campaigns.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Individual Giving Officer is responsible for fundraising activities to grow the Frye’s giving community and secure funding from existing and prospective donors including members. This position manages a portfolio of donors and prospects, cultivates relationships to bring people closer to the museum, solicits annual fund gifts, and identifies opportunities to ask for greater investment and major gifts. The Individual Giving Officer actively builds relationships and develops communication strategies for individuals and groups. Sharing an authentic enthusiasm for the arts, the IG Officer will consider all aspects of the Frye Art Museum—its history, exhibitions, and programs—to build enduring relationships and resources that will sustain Seattle’s only free art museum.
This Job Summary is a summary of the primary duties and responsibilities of this role at the Frye Art Museum. Employees must maintain a high degree of flexibility in our rapidly changing environment and, as such, may be required to perform additional duties beyond the scope described here from time to time.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Fundraising (80%)
- Manage an evolving portfolio of up to 300 mid-level donors and members, cultivating relationships with a goal of deepening patron engagement and soliciting financial support for the museum.
- Develop and implement overall moves management plans, strategies and steps for donors, including research and identification, cultivation, gift solicitation, and stewardship.
- Gain and leverage a deep familiarity with the museum and its resources (exhibitions, learning and engagement programs, and artistic and executive personnel) in cultivating donors and prospects.
- Track and meet metrics for interactions and solicitations (phone calls, personal visits, exhibition walk-throughs, emails and other).
- Ensure data integrity, consistently and accurately record steps and interactions in the database as part of the moves management process.
- Report progress, pulling plan and step summaries as necessary, working with the Database associate or Development Manager.
- Understand (or have aptitude to learn) about modes of giving (Donor Advised Funds, retirement distributions, gifts of stock), to inform conversations and communications with individuals and groups.
- Support the planned giving program, cultivating longtime supporters, identifying existing commitments and soliciting future gifts/bequests when appropriate.
- Support the membership program and collaborate with the Membership Manager, soliciting membership in conjunction with portfolio goals.
Communications (10%)
- Write compellingly for a wide range of purposes including personal and group emails, program descriptions, gift proposals, museum updates, and more.
- Work with the Communications team as necessary to create proposal materials and broad-based donor emails when appropriate.
- Collaboratively manage a donor-specific communications calendar, working with the Communications department to ensure coordination of campaigns.
Events and Other (10%)
- Participate in member, donor, and public events, including exhibition openings, VIP receptions, prospecting events, sponsor events, and occasionally external events. Serve as a spokesperson or ambassador representing the Frye when appropriate.
- Contribute to a positive organizational culture based on mutual respect and a spirit of collegiality, cooperation, and openness to many perspectives.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Fundraising experience and demonstrated success in relationship building, cultivation and securing support for general operations and/or special projects.
- Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in written materials) and to actively listen.
- Ability to work independently with purpose and accuracy independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues.
- Strong time management and excellent organizational skills. Detail oriented with ability to prioritize and with a bias towards action and follow through.
- Adherence to the Donor Bill of Rights
- Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- A commitment to the Frye Art Museum’s mission, history and future and DEIA values
