No one to witness and adjust, study #2

Since their first collaboration in 2004 and the formation of their company zoe | juniper in 2006, choreographer Zoe Scofield and visual artist Juniper Shuey have blurred the boundaries between disciplines, bringing together dance, video installation, sculptural objects, and photography. They see their work as existing in a state of liminality—the in-between—between disciplines, between conscious action and unconscious reaction, activating the moments just between cause and effect. They believe in having their visual and choreographic designs work in tandem, seamlessly joining aesthetics and form. As artists, they are united by respect for, and subversion of, classical form, aesthetic clarity, and a desire to create a sense of heightened reality.

With each work, zoe | juniper creates a new lens through which to examine, expose, and explore their choreography and visual world. For their new work, No one to witness and adjust, study #2, they see the sets, plaster casts, and videos they are producing as a lens through which to view the interactions between choreography, dancers, time, space, and video. They see this work not as object-oriented, but as the performative staging of a process—as a ritual in which the objects left behind are relics, not self-sufficient but rather always pointing back to the processes that made them.
