Field Trip to the Museum

The school visit program at the Frye Art Museum nurtures a learner-centered environment and supports twenty-first-century skills and Washington State Learning Standards. Visits can be designed as stand-alone programs or in conjunction with Art in Your Classroom.

SCHOOL VISIT PROGRAM | Grades Pre-K–12

Guided Visit

Offered Tuesday–Sunday 11 am–4 pm, year-round.

Join us for a one-hour interactive guided tour led by our trained Gallery Guides, utilizing Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a student-centered, inquiry-based teaching method. While engaging with works of art, students are encouraged to make close observations and create connections to personal experiences. Our small ratio of Gallery Guides to students (typically 1:7) provides each student the opportunity to participate in group discussion throughout the tour.

Free. Up to 30 students per tour. Public schools reimbursed up to $90 for bus transportation.

Three weeks advanced registration is required. To register, please email schoolvisit@fryemuseum.org or call 206 432 8211.

Self-Guided Visit

Available Tuesday–Sunday 11 am–4 pm, Thursday until 6 pm, year-round.

You are welcome to guide your class through the Museum to meet your specific learning goals. We are happy to provide resources and materials upon request.

Free. Public schools reimbursed up to $90 for bus transportation.

Guided Visit + Art-Making

Offered Tuesday–Thursday, 10 am–12 pm, October–June

Each two-hour visit includes a guided tour in the gallery and a hands-on art activity in the studio.

Our trained Gallery Guides utilize Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a student-centered, inquiry-based teaching method, to facilitate student engagement with works of art. They encourage students to look closely, share perspectives, and build connections to their personal lives and classroom learning. Our small ratio of Gallery Guides to students (typically 1:7) provides each student the opportunity to participate in group discussion throughout the tour.

The art-making activity in our art studio aligns with themes and materials according to current exhibition and grade level. Facilitated by our experienced Teaching Artist, the hands-on activity provides students the opportunity to explore materials and experiment with artistic processes. The art activity is designed to be open-ended yet closely aligned to the learning in the gallery tour. Past activities have ranged from sculpture and collage to drawing and mixed media work.

$75 per class of 30. Up to 60 students total. Public schools reimbursed up to $90 for bus transportation.

Three weeks advanced registration is required.

Field Trips are supported in part by the Grousemount Foundation, US Bank, Windermere Madison Park, the Frye Foundation, and Frye donors.
