School Visits

PRE-K–5 GUIDED VISITS AND ART ACTIVITIES

Find inspiration this year at the Frye Art Museum.

The Museum field trip includes a one-hour gallery discussion led by a trained gallery guide and a one-hour art activity in the Frye Art Studio taught by Museum staff. Gallery visits and art activities are based on Washington State EALRs and are designed for each grade level. This program provides opportunities to look closely at works of art, participate in discussions, and create from the imagination. School visits to the Frye’s exhibitions foster critical and creative thinking through rich, immersive experiences. Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 am–noon.

IN-CLASSROOM VISIT

Pre-K–12

This spring, while the Museum galleries are closed for renovation starting on April 16, the Frye will come to you! Have a Frye Art Museum art educator visit your school for a one-hour discussion and art-making activity. This is a great way to bring an interactive art experience into your classroom.

CREATIVE COLORS

Pre-K-1

Dive deep into the world of color! Students participate in group discussions about works of art, including a selection of images from the Frye’s Founding Collection. Following discussions, students engage in an art activity and learn about mixing colors and utilizing colors to express themselves with oil pastel.

ILLUSION OF DEPTH

Grades 2-3

Through group discussion, students explore a selection of images of works of art from the Frye’s collection, and focus on artistic methods used to create the illusion of depth. Students build on ideas generated during the discussion to create an oil pastel picture with a foreground, middle-ground and background.

SPEAK TO ME

Grades 4-5

Students look closely at art images, including several from the Frye, and consider how works of art elicit a variety of responses from viewers, such as laughter, alarm, or curiosity. Applying concepts raised during the discussion, students then use oil pastels to create their own evocative works of art.

ART IN MOTION

Middle School

How can works of art capture action? Students uncover the stories that accompany works of art which depict movement and action, including several images from the Frye’s Founding Collection. After a slide show and discussion, students use classmates as models and practice sketching movement and gesture in charcoal.

ONE MOMENT IN TIME

High School

Discussing images of works of art, including objects from the Frye collection, students see how small details are woven together into complex stories. Thinking about their own memories or stories, students combine multiple details to draw charcoal images with strong narratives.

PRE-K–12 GUIDED AND SELF-GUIDED VISIT

The Museum is a powerful complement to the school curriculum. Whether studying writing, biology, European history, or visual art, students will find the Frye’s exhibitions provide a platform for direct engagement.

A guided visit and gallery discussion exposes students to diverse opinions, encourages them to comment on and critically evaluate what they observe, and allows them to make connections between works of art spanning a wide period of history. Teachers are invited to bring their class for a one-hour guided visit and discussion of the exhibitions. Teachers are also welcome to design their own Museum experiences, tailoring their curriculum to an exhibition and guiding their students through the Museum independently. Sketching or writing with pencils in the galleries is always encouraged. Pencils and clipboards are available at the Information Desk. Please complete the registration form at least two weeks prior to your visit to prevent overcrowding the galleries.

COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY GUIDED AND SELF-GUIDED VISITS

The Frye Art Museum is a valuable cultural resource and powerful teaching tool. The Museum enhances college-level curricula and provides an immersive experience for exploration and inspiration.

Faculty members are encouraged to use the Museum as a laboratory for coursework and projects based on exhibitions. Please complete the registration form at least two weeks prior to your visit to prevent overcrowding the galleries.

Guided and self-guided visits cannot be scheduled from April 16 to June 20, 2012 while the Museum galleries are closed for renovation.
