Trail Magic Master Class

Class with Mandy Greer

Event Canceled

September 3-4, 10 am-4 pm, Frye Art Studio

September 5, 11 am-September 7, 6 pm, Snoqualmie National Forest

Participants 18 years and up with some background in the arts and camping and hiking experience.

Presented in conjunction with Wild Times by Susan Robb, this special class takes place in both the studio and in the wilderness, culminating in a performance of “trail magic,” an act of generosity for thru-hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail.

For two days in the studio, participants create headdresses and learn movement and vocal techniques. With Greer and guest artists Jessica Jobaris and Kate Ryan, you will also explore improvisational performance practices, focusing on notions of caretaking, pilgrimage, sanctuary/shelter, and the practical purpose of ritual.

These initial creations are taken to the wilderness where participants respond to the natural environment. Activities will include a day hike to Franklin Falls, a dramatic site to perform with fellow participants and develop raw material for Greer’s new photographic and film series and, throughout the weekend, you will make smudge bundles for fire ceremonies, explore knot magic, participate in the ceremonious sharing of food, and spend an afternoon creating flowered standards. Refining visual, kinesthetic, and sound ideas will manifest in a site-specific art performance for thru-hikers.

Participants must be proficient campers and hikers, physically capable of carrying their own camping gear (backpack, tent, sleeping bag and pad, appropriate clothing, camping stove, food, and water) to a drive-in campsite. The performance will require a one-day six-mile roundtrip hike with costumes, food, water, and gear.
