Boren Banner Series: Serrah Russell
April 28 - October 03, 2027
The Frye has opened its archives to Seattle artist Serrah Russell, inviting her to create a new work for the museum’s seventy-fifth anniversary. Russell, known for hand-cut photo collages that find new relationships among existing images, brings an artist’s eye to the project of institutional history. The museum’s archives hold records of the organization, as well as those related to the business operations and family of its benefactors, Charles and Emma Frye. Working by hand, Russell layers these holdings into a new composition, using photomontage to hold poetic association and social critique in the same frame.
ABOUT THE BOREN BANNER SERIES
The Boren Banner Series is a public art initiative by the Frye Art Museum that reflects the Museum’s commitment to showcasing artists of the Pacific Northwest. Presented biannually, the series gives regional artists the opportunity to create new site-specific work or show a previously unexhibited piece at monumental scale in the form of a 16 x 20 ft. vinyl banner. The billboard-size work is prominently sited on the Museum’s east facade, facing Boren Avenue: the Frye’s most visible and accessible physical interface.
Boren Banner Series: Serrah Russell is organized by Alexis L. SIlva, Curatorial Assistant.
Generous support provided by Frye members.
Our work is supported, in part, by an award from 4Culture.
