Northern Latitudes: The Frye and Alaska

Northern Latitudes: The Frye and Alaska presents paintings by Jules Dahlager, Ted Lambert, Sydney Laurence, Fred Machetanz, Theodore Richardson, Cleveland Rockwell, Jonathan Van Zyle, and Eustace Ziegler—artists who experimented with representations of light and land in their depictions of America’s forty-ninth state. The rugged wilderness and solitude experienced by these artists when they journeyed to Alaska is encapsulated in images of expansive skies, isolated outposts, and panoramic views of snowcapped Mt. McKinley.

Featuring a selection of acquisitions from the Frye Art Museum’s collection, Northern Latitudes also celebrates the special role Alaska played in the Museum’s history. The majority of the exhibition’s paintings were acquired by long-term Frye Director Ida Kay Greathouse, whose dedication to Alaskan art led to the Museum’s construction of an Alaska Wing, which opened in 1984. In addition to works from the Frye collection, Northern Latitudes includes a number of paintings generously loaned by Braarud Fine Art in La Conner, Washington.
