Under the Sky
May 01, 2027 - February 13, 2028
The sky is an enduringly alluring subject for artists. Luminous horizons, drifting clouds, and brooding storms can evoke a season or place while reflecting changing ideas about nature and scientific discovery.
Focusing primarily on works created in Europe and America between 1870 and 1920, this exhibition brings together painted landscapes from the Frye’s Founding Collection with contemporaneous selections from the Maren Monsen and Jeff Grainger Collection of Photography. Made in the decades following the Industrial Revolution, these paintings and photographs show artists turning their eyes outward and upward to explore complex themes from spirituality to national and regional identity in a world reshaped by new technologies and rapid modernization.
Under the Sky is organized by Rangsook Yoon, PhD, Senior Director of Curatorial Affairs.
Generous support provided by Frye members.
Our work is supported, in part, by an award from 4Culture.
