Inspired by Lotus L. Kang, experience a captivating evening of Unpoetry, featuring ekphrastic responses—creative pieces made in direct response to a work of visual art—from a superb lineup of local artists.

With an emphasis on collaboration and genre-bending performances, each event offers a unique blend of sight, sound, and spoken word. Created in partnership with Eric M. Acosta, founder of Unpoetry, this series provides an immersive experience that invites new ways to engage with current exhibitions by listening, feeling, and finding meaning.

About the Presenters

Noelle Chun is a dance artist who looks to the body as a primary source of inquiry, resistance, and imagination. Her practice explores where dance can hold absence and presence, grief and optimism, surrender, and aliveness. She is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate and create alongside this group of artists for Unpoetry at the Frye.

María Dolores A. Matienzo is a composer, intermedia artist, poet, and archivist living on unceded Coast Salish lands in so-called Seattle, Washington. Her work explores ritual, sensory experience, immaterial labor, and memory and memorialization.

Tom Scully is a Seattle-based guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and teacher whose solo work centers on improvisation, and the manipulation of common objects to create auxiliary sound sources or “organisms”.

He is currently the guitarist for the improvised noise duo CSTMR and Seattle “gunk-pop” band Black Ends.
