Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Stephanie Syjuco: After/Images, join artists Stephanie Syjuco and Anida Yoeu Ali for a deep dive into the complexities of their work. The conversation will focus on two anchor pieces from their concurrent Seattle exhibitions, Syjuco’s at the Frye and Ali’s at the Seattle Asian Art Museum.

Moderated by Curatorial Assistant Alexis L. Silva, the artists will investigate overlapping approaches to storytelling, ownership of those stories, and local/transnational community building through various forms of disruption.

About the Artists

Stephanie Syjuco works in photography, sculpture, and installation, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Her projects leverage open-source systems, shareware logic, and flows of capital, in order to investigate issues of economies and empire. Recently, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of racialized, exclusionary narratives of American history and citizenship. Born in the Philippines in 1974, Syjuco received her MFA from Stanford University and BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award and a Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work is in numerous collections, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, The Getty Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019–20 and is featured in the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. A long-time educator, she is an Associate Professor in Sculpture at the University of California, Berkeley. She lives in Oakland, California.

Anida Yoeu Ali is an interdisciplinary artist whose works span performance, installation, new media, public encounters, and political agitation. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to art making, her installation and performance works investigate the artistic, spiritual and political collisions of a hybrid transnational identity. Ali’s works have been exhibited widely at the Haus der Kunst, Palais de Tokyo, Musée d'art Contemporain Lyon, Shangri-La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture and Design, and the Seattle Asian Art Museum. She is a recipient of the 2020 Art Matters Fellowship and the 2015 Sovereign Asian Art Prize. She received her BFA from University of Illinois and an MFA from School of the Art Institute Chicago. Currently based in Tacoma, Ali is the co-founder of Studio Revolt, an award-winning media lab with filmmaker Masahiro Sugano. Ali serves as a Senior Artist-in-Residence at the University of Washington Bothell and has a transnational artistic practice between the Asia-Pacific region and the U.S.
