Makers at Home is an Instagram series from The Frye Art Museum Store, giving us a peek into the lives and routines of some of our favorite designers stocked by the Store during this unusual time of isolation.
If you’ve visited the Store in the last year, you’ve seen Shaana Hatamian’s stunning handwoven pillows on display. Shaana is a fiber artist based in Seattle. Her latest work, the ”cushion project" is an exploration of clean, geometric textiles that are transformed into supportive objects. Find out more on her Instagram @shaanahatamian and her website.
Here is what Shaana had to say for our Makers at Home project, originally shared April 24, 2020:
I have taken this time to really appreciate my combined studio-living space. My open studio has a corner which houses all of my materials and my floor loom. Luckily, I have several projects to focus on and feel grateful that I have a meditative, creative outlet. In the past month of isolation, my inspiration has come from my own interior objects: two finely crafted Persian rugs passed down from my family and a small rug I brought back from Morocco this past fall. After spending so much time at home, I find myself studying these personal objects and inspired by the intricate details, aiming to channel their beauty into my own weavings.
I have also spent my free time experimenting making a traditional Iranian rice dish called tahdig. The crunchy crispy crust that forms at the bottom of the pot makes it my favorite food. My mother, a tahdig goddess, has been coaching me on this art form during various video calls and I have been enjoying connecting to my culture through making traditional dishes. When things shift back to semi-normal, I am excited to have a tahdig party!
My third outlet has been researching inspiring and creative content for @_poopu_ social media for a pop up market that two friends and I co-founded. We dive into some pretty eclectic topics and I have been inspired by the range of different subjects we have talked about and shared. All in all, I have been trying to be creatively productive during this time, keeping up my communication with friends and family, and feeling grateful for everything that I have.
