Unpoetry at the Frye

Unpoetry at the Frye

Inspired by Priscilla Dobler Dzul: Water Carries the Stories of Our Stars and Boren Banner Series: Camille Trautman, this captivating evening features ekphrastic responses—creative pieces made in direct response to a work of visual art—from multidisciplinary artist Arabella, composer Eddie Mospan, poet Caleb Thomson, and interdisciplinary collective Til the Teeth.

With an emphasis on collaboration and genre-bending performances, each event presents a fresh lineup of local artists, offering a unique blend of sight, sound, and spoken word. Created in partnership with Eric M. Acosta, founder of Unpoetry, this series provides an immersive experience that invites new ways to engage with current exhibitions by listening, feeling, and finding meaning.

About the Artists

Arabella is an installation and video artist exploring themes and dreams of their Filipino immigrant experience, culture, and collective liberation. They have too many CRT TVs and analog video gear. They are on the advisory board of Short Run, are a member of the artist collective House of Kilig, and can be found collaborating with artists in the Seattle/Tacoma area.

Eddie Mospan is a Russian-American bassist and composer. They strive to create works that encourage somatic perception and embodied understanding, while foregrounding perspectives and experiences that are typically excluded or diminished within the context of classical music. Eddie is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Washington, where they study double bass with Jordan Anderson and have studied composition with teachers including Huck Hodge, William Dougherty, Yiğit Kolat, and Jeffrey Bowen.

Caleb Thomson is a longtime PNW teaching artist. He is an academically trained poet, which is a weird thing, and has the MFA from Bennington College to prove it. He’s worked as an educator with organizations including Arts Corps, SAM, and the YMCA, and also teaches private music lessons for students of all ages. Caleb plays in a bunch of bands, some of which are Von Wildenhaus, Afterlife Giftshop, and Disney Gillespie.

Till the Teeth is an interdisciplinary collective founded by Jonathan Rodriguez and Sandesh Nagaraj, spanning performance, sculpture, and multimedia installation. Grounded in the cultural and contested landscapes of the U.S./Mexico border and southern India, Till the Teeth serves as a lens for framing sonic and spatial ecologies.

Through improvisation, ritual, and metamorphosis, they activate found objects, field recordings, and reimagined instruments to explore sound as an unpredictable, ephemeral, and communal medium for resistance and adaptation.
