Volunteer Spotlight is a series where we will shine a light on one of our awesome volunteers each month. Each spotlight will highlight the personalities of our volunteers and share more about their connections to the Frye.
This month, we are highlighting another bright Events & Programs Volunteer, Tiare Hernández Vázquez. We interviewed Tiare to learn more about her and her time at the Frye.
Hi Tiare, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I was born and raised in Mexico City and I moved to Seattle last year. I am a Customer Service professional and I used to work for the most important e-commerce retailer in Latin America. Here, I have been taking some certifications to improve my English skills and learn more about business. In my free time, I enjoy learning about art, watercolor painting, photography, and yoga.
How long have you been at the Frye and what made you want to volunteer?
I have been volunteering at the Frye Art Museum for five months now. I looked for volunteering here to know more about the different areas of the Museum and to meet people who were involved in the arts. Also, I thought that my work experience could help this organization.
What pieces, artists, programs or exhibitions do you remember most fondly from your experiences at the Frye?
I enjoyed a lot the Dress Codes and the Arbus Bonus exhibitions.
Can you tell us more about why Dress Codes: Ellen Lesperance and Diane Simpson and Pierre Leguillon: Arbus Bonus appealed to you?
I love clothing and I really enjoyed how Lesperance and Simpson showed that clothing is not only about its practical use but it also serves as a communication channel between individuals. Clothing has more meanings than what we think. On the other hand, I liked the Arbus Bonus exhibition because I could see a lot of work from one of the most famous photographers in history and learn a little bit about her life. It allowed me to understand the relationship between her work and her experiences.
Who are your favorite artists and why?
I like Edouard Manet and Pablo Picasso because I consider their contributions to Modern art as a starting point for the development of many other art vanguards.
I also like Daniel Arsham because I think he is an artist with an interesting concept and very high technical skills, also I love that he has strong references to Greek and Roman art.
Besides volunteering at the Frye, what do you like to do?
Yoga, watercolor painting and learning about art history.
How have you been spending your time in the wake of COVID-19?
Doing yoga, watercolor painting, learning about art history, and taking some courses related to my profession.
What is something others may be surprised to know about you?
I am from Mexico City and I moved here last year to improve my English.
How has your time in Seattle been so far since moving from Mexico City last year?
It has been great. I have met many interesting and kind people (a lot of new international friends). Also, I have visited amazing places here and lastly, I have started a lot of new activities.
What are some of your favorite things to do in Seattle?
Walking around the city, doing picnics in the parks, and eating out.
