Join esteemed dancer and choreographer Mark Haim for a dynamic movement workshop inspired by Alex Katz: Theater and Dance. Explore the outer reaches of expressive movement and gesture in response to guided creative prompts, with integrated visual art exercises that foster collaboration and collective reflection on spatial and kinetic understandings of the world.
This workshop will involve activities for a diverse range of movement abilities and is open to all skill levels, ages 16 and older. No prior dance experience is required.
Please dress comfortably, wear shoes suitable for movement on a concrete floor, and bring extra layers and a water bottle. The Frye Art Studio is accessible by stairs and elevator. For more information, visit the Frye's accessibility page.
About the Instructor
Hailed as “a choreographer’s choreographer” by Anna Kisselgoff of the NY The New York Times, Mark Haim is in his fifth decade of making dances. Born in New York City, he studied as a classical pianist at the Manhattan School of Music before beginning his formal dance studies with an honorary scholarship at The Juilliard School, where he received his BFA. He holds an MFA in dance from the ADF/Hollins University MFA program. Mark He has created new works for many dance companies in the US, Europe, and Asia, notably the Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballett Frankfurt, and the Limon Dance Company. He has restaged his works on companies such as The Joffrey Ballet, the Bat-Dor Dance Company of Israel, Djazzex, the Juilliard Dance Ensemble, and Yabin and Friends. Mark has been teaching dance since 1985 is currently on the faculty of the Velocity Dance Center, and the International Ballet Academy.
Alex Katz: Theater and Dance is organized by the American Federation of Arts and Colby College Museum of Art. The exhibition is curated by Levi Prombaum, former Katz Consulting Curator, Colby College Museum of Art. The 2022 presentation was organized by the Colby Museum with curatorial guidance from Robert Storr.
The Frye Art Museum's presentation is organized by Georgia Erger, Curator, with Alexis L. Silva, Curatorial Assistant.
