Meet Beau Dick: Maker of Monsters is a feature length documentary about Canadian art legend Beau Dick. An enigmatic carver from a small, remote village on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia, his remarkable masks have been celebrated across the global art scene—as vibrant expressions of West Coast Indigenous culture, sophisticated objects of contemporary art, and the focal point of the Frye’s exhibition Insatiable Beings.

Dick possessed an unprecedented ability to tap into the collective memory of his people and breathe new life into age-old traditions. In Maker of Monsters, filmmakers LaTiesha Fazakas and Natalie Boll explore the forces that made Beau who he was. Like a carver chipping away at a block of wood, the film gradually reveals deeper truths and understanding and illuminates a man whose art and life continue to transcend expectations and boundaries.

Following the screening, join a conversation with his daughter, matriarch Geraldine Dick—featured in the film—alongside director LaTiesha Fazakas and Frye curator Georgia Erger, as they reflect on the profound impact Dick made on his community and the art world at large.

About the Presenters

Geraldine Dick is a proud Kwakwaka’wakw, Nisga’a, and Tsimshian woman raised on the Northwest Coast. She is the daughter of the late master carver and activist Beau Dick, and Pam Bevan, a matriarch whose Nisga’a and Tsimshian roots run deep and steady. Her work, spoken and unspoken, honors the ones who came before, the ones walking beside her, and the ones yet to come. In every space she enters, Geraldine brings a voice shaped by loss, love, and lineage, and the belief that even in heartbreak, there is a way forward that is deeply rooted in remembering.

LaTiesha Fazakas is a director and curator who is dedicated to the promotion and exhibition of contemporary Indigenous art. She holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of British Columbia and established Fazakas Gallery in 2013. Fasakas was the curatorial coordinator for chief Beau Dick’s participation in documenta 14 in Athens, GR and Kassel, DE in 2017 and debuted her feature-length documentary, Maker of Monsters: The Extraordinary Life of Beau Dick later that year. In 2019, LaTiesha curated Beau Dick: Devoured by Consumerism and authored an accompanying catalog showcasing the life and work of the artist that featured essay contributions from John Cussans and Candice Hopkins.

Beau Dick: Insatiable Beings is organized by Georgia Erger, Curator, with curatorial advisory support by LaTiesha Fazakas.
