Antonia Kuo and Mark Johnson in Conversation

Antonia Kuo and Mark Johnson in Conversation

In honor of the opening of Twilight Child: Antonia Kuo and Martin Wong, join us for a conversation investigating the ties that bond these two artists born over forty years apart. Moderated by Associate Curator Georgia Erger, exhibiting Artist Antonia Kuo will be joined by Mark Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Art at San Francisco State University and contemporary colleague of Wong’s. The conversation will begin with a deep dive into the two artists’ bodies of work before dissecting the lasting impact of Wong’s influence on Kuo’s practice, uncovering unique formal and thematic overlaps on view in the exhibition.

Antonia Kuo lives and works in New York. She received an MFA from Yale University in 2018, a BFA from School of Fine Arts Boston and Tufts University in 2009, and a one-year certificate from the School of the International Center of Photography in 2013. Her work has been exhibited at Chapter, New York (2023); Chart, New York (2022); Each Modern, Taipei (2022); MAMOTH, London (2022); Make Room, Los Angeles (2021); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2020); Rubber Factory, New York (2018); and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York 14 (2016). She has been an artist-in-residence at Mass MoCA (2018), Vermont Studio Center (2016), and the Banff Centre (2015) and was a MacDowell Colony Fellow (2014), among others. Kuo’s work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and Centre Pompidou, Paris.

Mark Johnson is Professor Emeritus of Art at San Francisco State University (SFSU) and has been collaboratively involved for decades in documenting the careers of underrecognized artists in California by organizing exhibitions, publications, and public programs. He is currently co-editor of the online Martin Wong Catalogue Raisonné developed by the Stanford University Library and co-editor of a Google Arts and Culture project about the May's Photo Studio being developed by the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM); co-curator/co-editor of the retrospective Carlos Villa: Worlds in Collision (2021: Asian Art Museum/San Francisco Art Institute/UC Press); and co-director of a NEH-funded California Native American Artist Archives Project.
