The Voices of Legends: Baldwin and Bearden in Conversation

The Voices of Legends: Baldwin and Bearden in Conversation

Join The Williams Project's Summer of Baldwin: Celebrating the Witness, the Voice, the Man. The Williams Project is excited to partner with the Frye Art Museum to present a special event.

On December 15th, 1978, four longtime friends, artist Romare Bearden, writer James Baldwin, choreographer Alvin Ailey, and writer Arthur Murray, gathered in conversation to discuss the documentary Bearden Plays Bearden directed by Nelson E. Breen. The Williams Project is bringing this rare interview to life with four amazing local actors.

Join us in exploring the Frye Art Museum's exhibition Romare Bearden: Abstraction alongside The Williams Project's live performance.

Note: Proof of Covid-19 vaccination will be required for entry. Masks will be required for audience members during this program.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

The Williams Project is a national professional theatre ensemble, producing plays in Seattle, WA. Our mission is to make theatrical excellence accessible to diverse and engaged audiences, while paying artists a living wage. We make theatre in a manner consistent with our belief that professional artists are vital to our culture and deserve to be compensated in a way that recognizes their value. Great theatre artists are working class heroes, who sacrifice greatly to make important work. We pay artists a living wage in order to support that work.

Presented in partnership with The Williams Project.

Romare Bearden: Abstraction is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Neuberger Museum of Art of Purchase College, State University of New York. The exhibition is curated by Tracy Fitzpatrick, Director, Neuberger Museum of Art.

The national tour of Romare Bearden: Abstraction is sponsored by Morgan Stanley.

The presentation at the Frye Art Museum is organized by Georgia Erger, Associate Curator. Generous support for the installation at the Frye is provided by the City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, the Frye Foundation, and Frye Members. Media sponsorship is provided by The Seattle Times.
