Art Circle Member Jan Anderson has been surrounded by the arts her entire life—her father was a Seattle-based artist whose work was featured in exhibitions across the Emerald City in the mid-twentieth century, including the Frye Art Museum. On her upbringing, Jan says, “I cannot remember a time in my life without art. Although we did not have much money, we were rich in art, music, and literature.”

“I grew up, graduated from college, married, taught elementary school for over 40 years, traveled and visited museums around the world. But the Frye was unique. It was free. What a concept—art for everyone and for free! Who wouldn’t want to support a concept so perfect?”

For a time, Jan had to take care of family members and was unable to visit the Frye. After those loved ones had passed, her neighbors invited her to the Art History Lecture Series with Rebecca Albiani. “She was incredibly articulate, knowledgeable, and engaging. I was entranced. The highlight of my month!” Jan remembers. “Going to the Frye again helped me heal from all my losses. When my neighbors moved away, I continued with the lectures. I still love them, even though they are virtual.”

As a member for over a decade, Jan provides essential support for local artists featured at the Frye, like her father, as well as educational programming including her beloved Art History Lecture Series.
